2. Water supply

In Abyei water is overly abundant during the rainy season, making travel and field work very difficult, and it is terribly scarce in most areas during the dry season causing hardship for the people and often generating conflict over access to it. Only along Bahr el Arab and around four deep wells is water assured throughout the dry season. Already cattle are being moved down near the river or across it to be assured of water this year. People have to walk increasing distances to the water yards at the deep wells as their local shallow wells or haffirs (small reservoirs) or wadis (seasonal stream beds) dry up. Increasing the availability of underground water is an important element in any program to improve the health and well being of the people of Abyei.

The provincial water resource specialists and the Rural Water Corporation are well qualified to identify suitable sites for developing water sources. The main limitation appears to be financial resources for implementing programs. The Sudanese members of our team are proposing new surveys of water needs and resources within the Abyei district. We support this proposal and urge that it be followed up with a substantial commitment of resources to increase available water supplies.
